Face to Face - With the Great Apes: Anup Shah, Fiona Rogers Face to Face - With the Great Apes
Anup Shah, Fiona Rogers
R1,019 Discovery Miles 10 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Apes, they arouse very special feelings in many people because they are so similar to us. When we look into their eyes, we can feel the closeness to our own species. This is exactly the emotion conveyed in the coffee-table book Face to Face by Anup Shah and Fiona Rogers. In 60 fascinating photo portraits, the two nature photographers show chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and bonobos in close-ups taken in the animals' natural environment. For this, the renowned and multi-award-winning wildlife photographers lived together with the apes in the jungle for a long time and built up an intimate relationship of trust. Only in this way was it possible to capture these intimate portraits of the wild animals. In addition to the unique nature photography, the high-quality coffee table book also offers a lot of exciting background information on the history of the photographs. The individual photos are framed by interesting accounts of Anup's and Fiona's experiences during their lives with the animals. In wonderful stories, the two tell of the different characters of the animals photographed and thus give the reader hidden insights into the species of the great apes.

N2O and CH4 Emission from Wastewater Collection and Treatment Systems - State of the Science Report and Technical Report... N2O and CH4 Emission from Wastewater Collection and Treatment Systems - State of the Science Report and Technical Report (Hardcover)
Jeff Foley, Zhiguo Yuan, Jurg Keller, Elena Senante, Kartik Chandran, …
R3,013 Discovery Miles 30 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In a world where there is a growing awareness of the possible effects of human activities on climate change, there is a need to identify the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). As a result of this growing awareness, governments started to implement regulations that require water authorities to report their GHG emissions. With these developments there exists a strong need for adequate insight into the emissions of N2O and CH4. With this insight water authorities would be able to estimate and finally reduce their emissions. The overall objectives of the different research programs performed by partners of the GWRC members WERF (United States of America), WSAA (Australia), CIRSEE-Suez (France) and STOWA (the Netherlands) were: To define the origin of N2O emission. To understand the formation processes of N2O. To identify the level of CH4 emissions from wastewater collection and treatment systems. To evaluate the use of generic emission factors to estimate the emission of N2O from individual plants

The ECONOMICS OF THIRD WORLD NATIONAL PARKS - Issues of Tourism and Environmental Management (Hardcover, illustrated edition):... The ECONOMICS OF THIRD WORLD NATIONAL PARKS - Issues of Tourism and Environmental Management (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Anup Shah
R2,896 Discovery Miles 28 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

National parks and game reserves are under threat from exploitation by tourists and by people living on their borders. Parks, although highly valued by conservationists, are not protected from unregulated economic behaviour within and outside their borders. In The Economics of Third World National Parks, Anup Shah argues that parks and reserves are worth preserving, rigorously analyses the problem and advocates solutions drawing on a wide range of sources. Issues discussed include the effects of economic activity on a national park, the tourist problem, valuing a national park and the use of cost-benefit decision making. Dr Shah uses economic analysis to explore institutional arrangements which would compensate for externalities resulting from exploitation and over-use by tourists and local communities. The price mechanism, he argues, is not a satisfactory tool with which to protect areas of rich bio-diversity. The Economics of Third World National Parks presents a clear and thoughtful application of economic thought, and especially the concept of externalities, to a key problem which current institutional structures seem unable to resolve.

Marx, Marxism and the Spiritual (Hardcover): Anjan Chakrabarti, Anup Dhar, Serap A. Kayatekin Marx, Marxism and the Spiritual (Hardcover)
Anjan Chakrabarti, Anup Dhar, Serap A. Kayatekin
R4,169 Discovery Miles 41 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

While Marxian theory has produced a sound and rigorous critique of capitalism, has it faltered in its own practice of social transformation? Has it faltered because of the Marxian insistence on the hyper-secularization of political cultures? The history of religions - with the exception of some spiritual traditions - has not been any less heartless and soulless. This book sets up a much-needed dialogue between a rethought Marxian praxis of the political and a rethought experience of spirituality. Such rethinking within Marxism and spirituality and a resetting of their lost relationship is perhaps the only hope for a non-violent future of both the Marxian reconstruction of the self and the social as also faith-based life-practices. Building on past work in critical theory, this book offers a new take on the relationship between a rethought Marxism and a rethought spirituality (rethought in the life, philosophy and works of Christian thinkers, anti-Christian thinkers, Marxian thinkers, those critical of Marxist Statecraft, Dalit neo-Buddhist thinkers, thinkers drawing from Judaism, as well as thinkers drawing critically from Christianity). Contrary to popular belief, this book does not see spirituality as a derivative of only religion. This book also sees spirituality as, what Marx designated, the "sigh of the oppressed" against both social and religious orthodoxy. In that sense, spirituality is not just a displaced form of religion; it is a displaced form of the political too. This book therefore sets up the much needed dialogue between the Marxian political and the spiritual traditions. The chapters in this book were originally published in Rethinking Marxism - A Journal of Economics, Culture and Society.

Can Blockchain Solve the Hold-up Problem in Contracts? (Paperback, New Ed): Richard Holden, Anup Malani Can Blockchain Solve the Hold-up Problem in Contracts? (Paperback, New Ed)
Richard Holden, Anup Malani
R493 Discovery Miles 4 930 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

A vexing problem in contract law is modification. Two parties sign a contract but before they fully perform, they modify the contract. Should courts enforce the modified agreement? A private remedy is for the parties to write a contract that is robust to hold-up or that makes the facts relevant to modification verifiable. Provisions accomplishing these ends are renegotiation-design and revelation mechanisms. But implementing them requires commitment power. Conventional contract technologies to ensure commitment - liquidated damages - are disfavored by courts and themselves subject to renegotiation. Smart contracts written on blockchain ledgers offer a solution. We explain the basic economics and legal relevance of these technologies, and we argue that they can implement liquidated damages without courts. We address the hurdles courts may impose to use of smart contracts on blockchain and show that sophisticated parties' ex ante commitment to them may lead courts to allow their use as pre-commitment devices.

The Maoist Insurgency in Nepal - Revolution in the Twenty-first Century (Paperback): Mahendra Lawoti, Anup Kumar Pahari The Maoist Insurgency in Nepal - Revolution in the Twenty-first Century (Paperback)
Mahendra Lawoti, Anup Kumar Pahari
R1,701 Discovery Miles 17 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book deals with the dynamics and growth of a violent 21st century communist rebellion initiated in Nepal by the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) - CPN(M). It contextualizes and explains why and how a violent Maoist insurgency grew in Nepal after the end of the Cold War, in contrast to the decline of other radical communist movements in most parts of the world. Scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds employ a wide variety of approaches and methods to unravel different aspects of the rebellion. Individual chapters analyze the different causes of the insurgency, factors that contributed to its growth, the organization, agency, ideology and strategies employed by the rebels and the state, and the consequences of the insurgency. New issues are analysed in conjunction with the insurgency, such as the role of the Maoist student organization, Maoist's cultural troupes, the organization and strategies of the People's Army and the Royal Nepal Army, indoctrination and recruitment of rebels, and international factors. Based on original field work and a thorough analysis of empirical data, this book fills an existing gap in academic analyses of the insurgency in Nepal.

Anjan Chakrabarti, Anup Kumar Dhar
R1,656 Discovery Miles 16 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Challenging the more conventional approaches to dislocation and resettlement that are the usual focus of discussion on the topic, this book offers a unique theory of dislocation in the form of primitive accumulation.

Interrogating the 'reformist-managerial' and 'radical-movementist' approaches, it historicizes and politicizes the event of dislocation as a moment to usher in capitalism through the medium of development. Such a framework offers alternative avenues to rethinking dislocation and resettlement, and indeed the very idea of development. Arguing that dislocation should not be seen as a necessary step towards achieving progress - as it is claimed in the development discourse - the authors show that dislocation emerges as a socio-political constituent of constructing capitalism.
This book will be of interest to academics working on Development Studies, especially on issues relating to the political economy of development and globalization.

Ramanan Laxminarayan, Anup Malani, David Howard, David L. Smith
R1,173 Discovery Miles 11 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Our ability to treat common bacterial infections with antibiotics goes back only 65 years. However, the authors of this report make it clear that sustaining a supply of effective and affordable antibiotics cannot be without changes to the incentives facing patients, physicians, hospitals, insurers, and pharmaceutical manufacturers. In fact, increasing resistance to these drugs is already exacting a terrible price. Every day in the United States, approximately 172 men, women, and children die from infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria in hospitals alone. Beyond those deaths, antibiotic resistance is costing billions of dollars through prolonged hospital stays and the need for doctors to resort to ever more costly drugs to use as substitute treatments. Extending the Cure presents the problem of antibiotic resistance as a conflict between individual decision makers and their short-term interest and the interest of society as a whole, in both present and future: The effort that doctors make to please each patient by prescribing a drug when it might not be properly indicated, poor monitoring of discharged patients to ensure that they do not transmit drug-resistant pathogens to other persons, excesses in the marketing of new antibiotics, and the broad overuse of antibiotics all contribute to the development and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The book explores a range of policy options that would encourage patients, health care providers, and managed care organizations to serve as more responsible stewards of existing antibiotics as well as proposals that would give pharmaceutical firms greater incentives to develop new antibiotics and avoid overselling. If the problem continues unaddressed, antibiotic resistance has the potential to derail the health care system and return us to a world where people of all ages routinely die from simple infections. As a basis for future research and a spur to a critically important dialogue, Extending the Cure is a fundamental first step in addressing this public health crisis. The Extending the Cure project is funded in part by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation through its Pioneer Portfolio.

Guava is commercially grown in over 70 countries, and is gaining in popularity as a 'super fruit' due to its nutritional and health benefits. Notable recent developments include the potential to improve crop yields and quality. New research has also contributed to better understanding of the crop environment, plant growth and physiology of tree and fruit development, with implications for both breeding and cultivation. Guava is one of the few tree fruits where round-the-year harvest is possible by crop regulation. Interspecific hybridization with wild Psidium species has yielded hybrids which are resistant to wilt (a major guava disease in many countries) and are graft compatible. This book: * is the only publication available in English covering sustainable guava cultivation; * presents the current state of knowledge on the origin, history, physiology, culture and trade of guava throughout the world; and * addresses the major production and post-harvest problems. With contributions from international experts, this is a valuable resource for researchers and students in horticulture, and guava-industry support personnel.
